Android 9 Pie OS Official Update for Sony TVs is now rolling out in Europe

If you own a Sony TV that has been launched starting with the second part of 2016 and up until 2019, then you should be getting a brand new Android 9 Pie OS upgrade starting today. Note that the update is now rolling out for users in Europe.

This new Android 9 Pie OS upgrade has already been launched for Sony TVs 2016-2019 models in Latin America, Canada, and the US earlier this year, with Europe being the last region that was waiting on it to roll out.

The new Settings UI has been separated into seven major tabs: Watching TV, Display & Sound, Network & Internet, Accounts & Sign-in, Apps, Device Preferences, and Remotes & Accessories. To access the Settings menu you simply need to press Home on your remote and select Settings from the Android 9 Pie home screen.

The new Android 9 update will bump the Sony firmware version to 6.7140 and it will bring the following tweaks:

  • redesigned Settings menu.
  • MediaPlayer app that now combines Video, Album and Music apps into a single thing.
  • WPS function has been removed completely.
  • faster TV responseiveness when powering on the TV from standby mode.
  • better video playback for HbbTV apps.
  • better Wi-Fi functionality.
  • no more black screen when HEVC format decoding is done by the TV Tuner.
  • support for HEVC 100/120Hz in USB video playback.
  • no more blinking LED bug on AG8 models.
  • improved overall system perforamnce.

There are other changes done to other areas of the Android system that aren't listed on the official page, but we expect to see better performance, smoother UI and faster app responsiveness after the update is applied.

The official Android 9 Pie update to v6.7140 is available for all the Sony TV units listed below. All the models below are the TVs that have been were sold in Europe starting from late 2016 and up until the end of 2019.

In order to verify that the official update to Android 9 Pie OS is ready for your Sony Android TV, then you should simply hit the Help button on your remote, and then open the System Software Update tab. If a new official update is ready for download, then you should simply confirm the download and your TV will complete the process automatically. When the update is installed successfully you should reboot the TV one more time.

If you're an advanced user, then you can use the instructions listed by Sony Support here. For the manual installation you need to download the firwmare update zip to your computer, and after the download is done you have to unzip the update file and copy it to a USB stick. NOTE: apply the update only if your Sony Android TV model number is listed above and only if you are an advanced user.

The Android 9 Pie OS roll out will most probably be the last big OS upgrade that some of the TVs above will see.
